faces foreclosure
HONOLULU (AP) — A 93-year-old Honolulu woman is facing foreclosure because she refuses to properly connect her home to the city’s sewer system.
Sunny Lee owes hundreds of thousands of dollars in fines for the home she has lived in for 55 years.
Lawyers say it’s the first time Honolulu has foreclosed on someone for not hooking up a line directly to the city’s sewer grid.
Lee had been using a line that ran through a neighbor’s house. But the line was discovered when it sprang a leak in 2000.
The neighbors sued to try to recover repair costs and settled with other residents but not Lee’s family.
The line was disconnected in 2002 when a judge ruled Lee didn’t have rights to the line.
Oahu drowning victim identified
HONOLULU (AP) — Authorities have identified the victim of a drowning in southeast Honolulu as 27-year-old Daniel Lowe of Modesto, Calif.
Fire officials say Lowe died Saturday at Spitting Caves, a cliff-diving area in southeast Oahu.
Authorities say Lowe jumped into the water but was unable to climb up a nearby cliff.
Art sought for Oahu bus center
HONOLULU (AP) — Honolulu’s arts commission is seeking two $100,000 pieces for a bus station in Wahiawa.
City officials are seeking proposals for the Wahiawa Transit Center, a two-story building decorated in a historic theme.
The pieces will go on interior driveway walls. Officials say artists can propose murals, a sculpture or any works that would be permanently wall-mounted.
The city is accepting applications through Jan. 11.
5,000 lose power in Molokai after pole fire
KAUNAKAKAI, Hawaii (AP) — Authorities say roughly 5,000 households lost, then regained power on Molokai after a pole caught fire near a power plant.
Hawaii News Now reports the power was restored before 6:30 a.m.
There are no injuries reported. Officials are investigating the cause of the fire near Palaau Power Plant.
