During the week of Oct. 1-7, Big Island police arrested 31 motorists for drunken driving. Five of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes. One was under the age of 21.
The numbers of arrests by district were: South Hilo, 17; Kona, 12; Puna and Hamakua, 1 each.
So far this year, there have been 1,093 DUI arrests compared to 1,126 during the same period last year, a decrease of 2.9 percent.
There have been 1,114 major accidents so far this year compared to 1,059 during the same period last year, an increase of 5.2 percent.
So far this year, there have been 31 traffic fatalities on the Big Island compared to 16 during the same period last year, an increase of 93.75 percent.
To date, 15 fatalities have been linked to impaired driving: six to drugs; three to alcohol; and six, a combination of both.
DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide.
