Big Island police arrested 37 motorists for drunken driving between Sept. 24 and Sept. 30, the Hawaii County Police Department announced Monday.
Seven of the drivers were involved in vehicle wrecks. Four were under the age of 21.
So far this year, there have been:
— 1,062 DUI arrests compared with 1,096 during the same period last year, a decrease of 3.1 percent.
— 1,089 major wrecks compared with 1,035 during the same period last year, an increase of 5.2 percent.
There were 30 traffic fatalities on the Big Island compared with 16 during the same period last year, an increase of 87.5 percent.
To date, there have been six fatalities related to drugs, three related to alcohol, and six from a combination of both this year for a total of 15.
DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide, police said.
