About 75 Hawaii Preparatory Academy fourth-, fifth- and seventh-graders participated in the annual “Get the Drift and Bag It” International Coastal Cleanup on Sept. 14.
The event was sponsored by The Ocean Conservancy and coordinated by the county Department of Parks and Recreation Aquatics Division.
Students focused their efforts on Spencer Beach Park and the Kawaihae Harbor areas. They gathered 280 pounds of debris, which included 3,146 cigarette butts, 2,262 caps and lids, and 426 plastic bags or fragments.
Seventh-graders analyzed and documented their findings. Over the past 25 years, Ocean Conservancy’s International Coastal Cleanup has become the world’s largest volunteer effort for ocean health. About nine million volunteers from 152 countries and locations have cleared 145 million pounds of trash from the shores of lakes, streams, rivers, and the ocean on just one day each year.
