During the week of Sept. 17-23, Big Island police arrested 26 motorists for drunken driving. Three of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes.
The numbers of arrests by district were: Kona and South Hilo, 11 each; and Puna, 4.
So far this year, there have been 1,025 DUI arrests compared to 1,076 during the same period last year, a decrease of 4.7 percent.
There have been 1,065 major accidents so far this year compared to 1,017 during the same period last year, an increase of 4.7 percent.
So far this year, there have been 30 official traffic fatalities on the Big Island compared to 16 during the same period last year, an increase of 87.5 percent.
To date, 15 of those fatalities have been related to impaired driving: six to drugs; three to alcohol; and six, a combination of both.
DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide.
