Regarding the article titled, “Doc takes on arthritis,” published on Saturday, Sept. 8 (Tribune-Herald): I would like to clarify that total joint replacement surgery has been performed on the Big Island long before the computer navigation technique.
Patients did have the option to have their joint replacement surgery without leaving the island before. Moreover, traditional joint replacement surgery without navigation is a time-proven procedure with very high success rates.
The computer navigation system — and other systems like pre-navigation based on MRI and CT scans — may add a level of precision in terms of making more precise bone cuts to help get a neutral mechanical axis for knee replacements and good cup position and limb length for hip replacements.
One of the main elements in successful joint replacement surgery, regardless of technique used, remains the partnership with the patient and their active involvement in their post-operative rehabilitation.

I read the article on the Merrie Monarch Festival (Tribune-Herald, Aug. 29). I’m so glad you finally wrote about the beginning.
That was David Kaula Jr. who won (the Kalakaua beard contest) three years in a row. George Na‘ope called and told me to please tell my husband not to enter any more. Nobody wanted to enter.
Robert is our son. David died many years ago but would be glad the article was written.

Obama must go
The economy is down while unemployment is soaring. Blaming it all on President Bush is senseless and boring.
The game is the same, excuses abound. President Obama did promise to turn things around.
We’re deeper in debt, as performances show. Only thing left: Obama must go.
America deserves better. Let us make it happen. There is no room for mediocrity. Don’t be blinded merely by your political party priority. Altering your voting strategy and preferences could prove to be gratifying. Try it.
In God we will always trust. Amen.
