Kendra Fujioka and Kathy Ann Tomoe Oyadomari are the winners of this year’s Richard and Eleanor Imai Scholarships for outstanding high school graduates whose parents are members of a Hongwanji temple on the Big Island. Each received a grant of $2,500.
Fujioka, daughter of Neal and Lorna Fujioka of Kurtistown, will study biology and Oyadomari, daughter of Alvin and Sharman Oyadomari of Keaau, will pursue a degree in business administration.
All applicants are evaluated on their knowledge and understanding of Shin Buddhism, as well as academic standing, along with their participation in temple, school and community activities. Both of this year’s winners are Hilo High School graduates and members of the Puna Hongwanji Mission.
“We wish both winners well, and lots of success,” said Imai Scholarship spokesman Sadao Aoki.
