Youth Sports Challenge
Participants are still be accepted for the ‘Aha Pai‘ea Keiki Sports Challenge, which will be held on Saturday at the University of Hawaii at Hilo Athletic Complex.
Sponsored by the Vulcan Athletic Club, the six-sport event begins at 8:30 a.m. and ends at 4 p.m. It is open to children ages 7-12 years old. A $5 registration fee includes lunch. The deadline to register is Wednesday.

The event begins with stretching exercises instructed by the UH Hilo athletic training staff. Participants then rotate between volleyball, basketball and cross country during the morning session. After lunch and another stretching session, participants rotate between baseball/softball, soccer and tennis.
Providing instructions for the various sports will be the UH-Hilo athletic coaching staff and student/athletes.
Honokaa grid parking
Due to health and safety concerns during athletic events, Honokaa High School will no longer allow spectator parking inside the gate during football games.
Honokaa athletic director Keith Tolentino said fans are welcome to park in the following areas surrounding the school campus:
• Along Pakalana, Ohelo or Mamane streets.
• In the lot behind the cafeteria.
• In the lot next to the Band Room.
• In the lot fronting the Auto Shop.
• At the County Complex.
As has been the school’s past policy, no tents, coolers or outside food will be allowed at any Honokaa High athletic event. Fans will be allowed to bring their chairs to football games.
If you require parking accommodations, contact the athletic director at 775-8800, ext. 237 in advance of the event you plan to attend.
Fight Hunger benefit
The “Help Fight Hunger” softball tournament will be held Aug. 25-26 in Hilo. Divisions will include 12-14 inch teams only as well as three girls teams (not kupunas).
All teams have to supply their own 12-14 inch softballs.
