Faith Tehani Severah-Ann Picar was crowned Little Miss Big Island Tahiti at the second annual pageant July 28 at Hilo’s Afook-Chinen Civic Auditorium. The new queen is the daughter of Helen Fuentes and Sevey Picar Jr. of Mountain View.
The pageant coordinated by Mehana Salvador is Tahitian-based, and every element of a contestant’s performance has to incorporate Tahitian traditions. Picar is 9 and has been dancing Tahitian for about three years.
The youngest of the four contestants in this year’s pageant, she sang, played drums and danced, receiving a standing ovation from a judge for her otea, or fast-beat song. Of the nine categories within the competition, she took home trophies for “Miss Photogenic” and best in swimsuit, talent, formal gown and interview.
Other contestants were Uilani Reis, first runner-up; Jaysha Pavao, second runner-up; and Shaelyn Thomas-Carvalho, third runner-up.
