On Saturday, Aug. 18, the Royal Kona Resort will celebrate the legendary mai tai cocktail with the Fourth Annual Don The Beachcomber Mai Tai Festival, featuring a $10,000 first prize for the “World’s Best Mai Tai.” Some 30 mixologists from around the world will be vying for the title and cash.
There’s something for everyone at the festival. Visitors can join in the fun with lively, free entertainment from award-winning musician Henry Kapono, enjoy a free pool party, taste and vote for the best barbeque in Hawaii at the Battle of the BBQ contest, shop for farm-fresh foods, island treats and locally-produced crafts at the Farmers’ and Crafters’ Marketplace, and, of course, take in all the action at the Mai Tai Mix-Off.
Judges for the Mai Tai Mix-Off competition between bartenders will include: Chris Teves, publisher of Hawaii Beverage Guide; Mark Nigbur, master distiller of Sammy’s Beach Bar Rum; Philip “Ippy” Alona, executive chef and Food Network star contestant; and Mark Healey, professional Big Wave surfer, freediver and stuntman.
Event sponsors are Hawaiian Hotels & Resorts, Don the Beachcomber’s Restaurant at the Royal Kona Resort, Young’s Market Company, Expedia Activities, Sammy’s Beach Bar Rum, Coruba Rum and Appleton Estate Jamaica Rum.
