Hawaii Learning Resource provided 40 students with access to Academic Enrichment Camps this summer at Hawaii Preparatory Academy’s Campus in Waimea. The camps, designed to increase engagement in learning, provide students with a fun, hands-on learning experience designed to inspire joy in learning and a better understanding of their own learning strengths, challenges, and interests.
The program, developed in 2010 in collaboration with Assets School, uses a strengths-based curriculum and provides training and mentoring to local educators to increase their skills in working with diverse learners.
The camps are offered in two sessions. Spy Academy Camp for students in grades 2-5 builds learning skills while emphasizing focus, observation and listening.
Game of Life Camp targets students in grades 6-8 and uses project-based lessons to build learning, team and life skills essential for navigating middle school with an emphasis on executive function concepts.
Grants from Friends of Hawaii Charities, Kuki‘o Community Fund, West Hawaii Fund, and the Richard Smart Fund, as well as private donations, help Hawaii Learning Resource keep the cost of the camps low and affordable for local families, said spokeswoman Toni Stylos.
Hawaii Learning Resource is a 501(c)3 nonprofit in Waimea.
