A 35-year-old Hilo woman who shoplifted merchandise from a Hilo store was sentenced Thursday to five years of probation, according to the Hawaii County prosecutor’s office.
An investigation by the Hawaii Police Department determined that Gayleen Oda entered the store on Christmas Eve 2011 and stuffed the merchandise, valued at $346.50, into a baby stroller. She was caught leaving the store by security personnel and detained for police.
When Oda was searched following her arrest, police recovered methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia.
As a condition of her probation on the second-degree theft and third-degree drug charges, Third Circuit Judge Glenn S. Hara also ordered Oda to serve one year in jail, with release to a residential drug treatment program, and to pay the mandatory shoplifting fine of $1,386.
Oda also had a prior drug offense in 2006. The judge ordered Oda to serve a new term of five years of probation in that case, with one year in jail and release to a residential drug treatment program.
