The message claims the recipient is an heir to the estate and property of a deceased relative.
The attorney general’s office says the email solicits financial information and that the state doesn’t send email solicitations regarding unclaimed property.
The public is being warned not to respond to the email or provide any personal information.
The bogus email also provides a form that bears a fake state seal.
It appears most of the emails have been targeted at mainland residents but officials say it’s possible they’ve also been sent to Hawaii residents. It’s not clear where the emails are originating from.
