The East Hawaii Hiroshima Kenjin Kai will host a medical team from the Hiroshima University School of Medicine from Wednesday, July 25, through Wednesday, Aug. 1. The physicians will conduct physical examinations of descendants of Hiroshima Prefecture immigrants. Examinations will include the weekend, except for a break on Monday, July 30.
This free medical examination is open to all East Hawaii Hiroshima Kenjin Kai members, their families and children or grandchildren. Every five years, a team of physicians and staff from the university visit the Big Island to conduct physical exams and provide health care awareness to the descendants of Hiroshima Prefecture immigrants. This data will help the University of Hiroshima in its ongoing medical immigrant research.
Forms for appointment and scheduling were mailed to all members with a response deadline of Friday, July 20. The Hiroshima medical team will be headed by Drs. Shuhei Nakanishi and Masayasu Yoneda and will consist of four physicians, four nurses, two registered dieticians and a dentist.
“The team’s last visit in 2007 produced excellent results and helped to engage and inspire many of the Kenjin Kai members to improve their health,” said EHHKK President Delbert Nishimoto.
This year the team will using the University of Hawaii at Hilo facilities to conduct their examinations and a mahalo party is set for the medical team and Kenjin Kai members at 6 p.m. Aug. 1 at New Star Restaurant. The medical team will then head over to the west side to conduct exams in Kona from Aug. 4-8.
