Chelsie Kualii is this year’s winner of the Big Island Retired Military Association’s $1,000 BIRMA-Mark Allen Traxler Memorial Scholarship award. Kualii, who graduated from Kamehameha Hawaii, started studying at the University of Hawaii at Manoa this summer.
This award is made annually to a Hawaii County high school senior who is a child of an active duty, reserve, National Guard or retired military member of the U.S. armed forces, or whose parent is an honorably discharged military veteran who has been awarded a service-connected disability rating. The award also is open to students who have completed at least two years in a Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps or Civil Air Patrol program or belong to the guard or reserve.
