Crew picked for Mars mission
HONOLULU (AP) — Researchers from the University of Hawaii and Cornell University have selected a six-person crew for a simulated Mars mission to test new forms of food for deep-space travel.
The Hawaii Space Exploration Analog Simulation is part of a study for NASA to determine the best way to keep astronauts well-nourished during multiple-year missions to Mars or the moon.
University of Hawaii says the crew members were selected from more than 700 applicants. The crew will participate in the four-month simulation mission early next year on a barren lava field on Mauna Loa.
The crew members include a research space scientist at the U.S. Geological Survey in Arizona, a science and technology journalist living in San Francisco and a materials scientist and educator working with disadvantaged students in Puerto Rico.
