During the week of June 25-July 1, Big Island police arrested 20 motorists for drunken driving. Three of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes. One was under the age of 21.
The numbers of arrests by district were: South Kona, 12; Hilo and Puna, 4 each.
So far this year, there have been 698 DUI arrests compared to 720 during the same period last year, a decrease of 3.1 percent.
There have been 727 major accidents so far this year compared to 682 during the same period last year, an increase of 6.6 percent.
So far this year, there have 14 official traffic fatalities on the Big Island compared to 11 during the same period last year, an increase of 27.3 percent.
To date, 11 of the fatalities are related to impaired driving. Six are related to drugs, three to alcohol and two, a combination of both, police said.
DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide.
