The Volcano Art Center will celebrate the traditions and art of hula with the Na Mea Hawaii Hula Kahiko Performance on Saturday from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. at the pa hula (hula platform) in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. The honor of performing at this Saturday’s hula kahiko goes to Halau Na Pua ‘O Uluhaimalama under the direction of kumu hula Emery Aceret.
For the hour-long outdoor hula performance, the audience is encouraged to bring mats for sitting on the grass and be prepared for variable weather conditions. On the same day, traditional Hawaiian arts and craft demonstrations will be held on the front porch of the Volcano Art Center Gallery from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Demonstrations include hands-on displays and lessons where all ages are invited to meet, learn from and talk story with friendly and knowledgeable locals.
Na Mea Hawaii Hula Kahiko is a free community event presented in cooperation with Hawaii Volcanoes National Park and supported in part by the county Department of Research and Development and the Hawaii Tourism Authority. As park entrance fees apply and parking is limited, carpooling is recommended. For more information, visit www.volcanoartcenter.org or contact Julie at (808) 967-8222 or julie@volcanoartcenter.org.
