Undersea cable law is enacted
HONOLULU (AP) — Hawaii’s governor has signed a bill into law that paves the way for an undersea cable to connect Oahu and Neighbor Island power grids.
The bill signed by Gov. Neil Abercrombie establishes a regulatory structure for installing and implementing an interisland high-voltage electric transmission cable system. He said at Wednesday’s bill signing ceremony it doesn’t mean a cable will be imminent but that it lays the foundation for one.
Neighbor Islands residents have been skeptical about an undersea cable proposal. But proponents say it would allow power sharing between islands, which could increase the reliability of electricity and lower power costs.
Kauai fire spurs evacuations
LIHUE, Kauai (AP) — State officials are urging voluntary evacuations as a Kauai wildfire gets closer to cabins at a section of Waimea Canyon State Park.
Fire crews have been battling the fire at Hikimoe Ridge since Monday. State officials say flames are less than a quarter-mile away from the nearest structures.
Firefighters are trying to keep the fire from jumping the Puu Ka Pele Forest Reserve contour road. The fire is burning in a eucalyptus tree plantation planted in the 1970s. More than 400 acres have burned.
Hot, dry and windy conditions are making fire behavior difficult to predict.
Large group caught in Maui flash flood at stream
WAILUKU, Maui (AP) — Thirty-six students and 10 adults are safe after getting caught in a Maui flash flood.
Maui fire officials say that aside from five with bumps and bruises, those in the group were not seriously injured.
They got caught in a flash flood Thursday at the Waihee stream about 100 feet upstream from the river mouth. They were able to make it out to the banks of the stream when rescuers arrived.
The students were evaluated by medics and did not require ambulance transport.
Anger management for Maui polo mallet assault
WAILUKU, Maui (AP) — A Maui man must undergo anger management for splitting a teen’s head open with a mallet during a polo match.
Wesley DeCoite, 58, was also sentenced to one-year probation. He pleaded no contest to a reduced charge of third-degree assault.
Deputy Prosecutor Kerry Glen says the 16-year-old victim didn’t want to see DeCoite serve any time behind bars.
The assault took place last year during a cowboy polo match in Makawao. According to court records, witnesses reported that DeCoite was playing very aggressively on an opposing team from the boy.
The teen was struck repeatedly in the head and chest. His mother says his head was split open, requiring stitches.
DeCoite apologized in court but said the teen should have been wearing a helmet.
