The Kohala community, the Trust for Public Land, Maika‘i Kamakani ‘O Kohala Inc., Malama Kai Foundation’s Ocean Warriors Program and the state Department of Land and Natural Resources will host a ho‘olaule‘a and land dedication at Kauhola Point from noon-2 p.m. on Saturday.
The event will include a blessing, lunch, Hawaiian music, speeches, and the opportunity for all to share their love for and knowledge about Kauhola, aka “Lighthouse.”
The 27.5-acre Kauhola Point property to the east of the road down to the lighthouse is now owned by the Kohala nonprofit Maika‘i Kamakani ‘O Kohala Inc. for the benefit of the public. Maika‘i will ensure that access is maintained for recreational and cultural practices, and that the land will remain undeveloped open space for Kohala to enjoy in perpetuity.
All are welcome to participate in this special land dedication ceremony. There will be a walking tour at 2 p.m. To reach the site, take Hala‘ula Road off Akoni Pule Highway and follow the signs. Hala‘ula Road is 2 miles east of the Kamehameha statue in Kapaau. Carpooling is recommended.
