The Hawaii County Council on Tuesday unanimously approved the placement of 24 rescue tubes on county beaches.
The cylindrical floatation devices will be donated by the South Hilo Rotary Club.
The Rotarians say they are effective ways to prevent drowning, since anyone can use them, and they can be placed essentially anywhere.
“It’s much more enjoyable to see this yellow flag than a white cross with flowers on it,” Rotary member Jack Stevenson told the council while holding a prototype.
The first tube will be placed at Coconut Island in Hilo.
Stevenson said the club still needs to work through the proper paper work with the county Planning Department before they can be installed.
It shouldn’t take too long for the first tube to be put in place, he said, but it won’t be in the next week or two.
“I don’t think it’s going to be a long process but I don’t think it’s going to be a couple weeks,” he said. “I think it will be a bit longer than that.”
