Panel appoints Maui judge after gov was too late
HONOLULU (AP) — Hawaii’s Judicial Selection Committee has stepped in to appoint an attorney to be a Maui Circuit Court judge after the governor failed to do so in time.
Gov. Neil Abercrombie appointed attorney Peter Cahill only to be told by the state attorney general that the appointment was made two days late.
The governor must appoint judges within 30 days of when the Judicial Selection Commission sends the governor a list of applicants.
Since the commission sent the governor the list on May 11, the appointment had to be made by Sunday. But the governor appointed Cahill Tuesday.
The commission said Thursday members met to discuss the candidates and picked Cahill in part because of his reputation for fairness on Maui.
The appointment is still subject to Senate confirmation.
