Hawaii reminds public Sacred Falls park is closed
HONOLULU (AP) — The Department of Land and Natural Resources is reminding the public Sacred Falls State Park on Oahu’s windward side is still closed to protect the public.
The state closed the park after a landslide there killed eight people and injured dozens of others in 1999.
The department said a boy was injured at the park on Thursday while trespassing with two other people. Honolulu firefighters and police officers rescued the boy and took him to a nearby hospital.
Firefighters also rescued an injured hiker in the park in April.
The department is investigating Thursday’s accident to determine what type of enforcement action it may take.
Entering a closed park is a petty misdemeanor.
Seventy thousand visitors used to visit Sacred Falls each year before the state closed the park.
