Three University of Hawaii at Hilo students have been awarded Institute for Study Abroad Global scholarships. The students will spend an entire academic year studying overseas starting in the fall.
The winners are Zachary Mayberry, a senior majoring in Japanese studies with an English minor, who will study at Seinan Gakuin University in Fukuoka, Japan; Mitchell Sambrano, a senior majoring in Japanese studies and a Honokaa High School graduate who is enrolling at Tokyo Gakugei University in Tokyo; and David Sellers, a sophomore and graduate from Keaau High School who plans to attend Korea University in Seoul, South Korea.
The purpose of the scholarship is to provide first-generation college students with financial need an opportunity to study abroad. Each student received $3,333, which was made possible through a grant sponsored by the Institute for Study Abroad (IFSA) Foundation in Indianapolis, Ind. Upon successfully completing the program, all recipients will undertake a service project to share the benefits of their experience with the community, and to encourage future students to study abroad.
