The Hawaii County Ronald Reagan Scholarship Fund has awarded six scholarships totaling $8,500 to seniors at Honokaa, Kohala and Hilo High Schools. All applicants for the scholarships were required to write an essay dealing with provisions of the Bill of Rights.
Andrew B. Trump of Kohala High School and Arwen May Potochney of Honokaa High School each won $2,500 scholarships. Trump will be attending Wheaton College and Potochney will be attending the University of Hawaii at Hilo.
Joshua Tobias of Honokaa High School, who also plans on attending UH-Hilo, won a $2,000 scholarship. Shalila Shek de Bourmont and Jonah Kuwahara-Hu of Hilo High School and Erlynn Takahashi of Honokaa High School each won $500 scholarships. Respectively, they will be attending Yale, Saint Mary’s College of California and a community college in Hawaii.
The 501(c)3 nonprofit organization awards college scholarships to public high school seniors in Hawaii County. Founded in 2003, it is funded through tax-deductible donations payable to HCRRSF at P.O. Box 1327, Kailua-Kona, HI 96745. The fund is not associated with any other national or local organization, and is operated wholly in and for the benefit of Big Island residents, said a spokesman.
