The Hawaii County Economic Opportunity Council, or HCEOC, is now accepting applications for the Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program, or LIHEAP.
LIHEAP, a federally funded program administered by the state Department of Human Services, allows low-income households to apply during the month of June for assistance with their utility bills. Applicants are informed of the amount of the award in late October or early November. The financial assistance is deposited in the applicant’s utility account and is used until it is exhausted.
All applications must be completed in person. HCEOC will be accepting applications at the following places: the main HCEOC office at 47 Rainbow Drive in Hilo; the Pahoa Neighborhood Center; the Naalehu HCEOC office, which is behind the community center and next to the tennis courts; the HCEOC Keauhou office at 68-7804 Mamalahoa Highway in Kona, and in Honokaa at the North Hawaii Education Research Center.
To apply, applicants should bring the following documentation: Picture ID for all adult household members; current electric bill (cannot be more than 30 days old from the day of application); verification of residence (no post office boxes accepted); asset verification; income verification; birth certificate for all members younger than age 5, and social security card.
