Hawaii charter school grapples with finances
HONOLULU (AP) — Hawaii’s largest charter school says its financial house is in order after an audit listed money management issues.
Hawaii Technology Academy provides a mostly online curriculum.
Auditors took issue with the school’s relationship with K12 Classroom LLC, which provides that curriculum. State Auditor Marion Higa’s December report says the head of the school is hired by the company, which poses “serious management and ethical concerns.”
School governing board Chairman Louis Saint-Cyr told the Honolulu Star-Advertiser (http://bit.ly/LRHtv3 ) the changes the school has implemented include an executive director employed by the local school board.
The school has also adopted the state ethics code and now requires two signatures for any expenditures of more than $2,500.
The school must come up with a plan to be financially self-sufficient from K12.
