Three Big Island graduating high school seniors and two Hawaii Community College students recently received scholarships from HPM Building Supply to help with upcoming college expenses.
The three recent graduates received HPM’s annual Barney S. Fujimoto Memorial Scholarships, earmarked for students planning to attend college within the University of Hawaii system. The $1,000 awards are named for a former HPM officer who strongly valued higher education.
Recipients Makana Agcaoili of Pahoa High School and Kaitlin Tavares of Kamehameha Schools will be attending UH-Manoa in September, where Agcaoili plans to study genetic engineering and Tavares will major in chemistry. Hilo High School graduate Kendra Fujioka will attend UH-Hilo to earn her biology degree, then plans to pursue a master’s degree in pathology.
Hawaii Community College students Orion Paye and Shiloh Castro were selected to receive $750 “Building Future Builders” scholarships toward their second year in the carpentry program.
Applications for 2013 scholarships will be available in January.
Since starting out 90 years ago as a small Hilo lumber mill, HPM Building Supply has grown to include three full-service building supply centers and four lumber yards on the Big Island.
The company provides materials statewide, with a sales center and a lumberyard in the Campbell Industrial Park on Oahu and in Lawai, Kauai. HPM also manufactures pre-engineered trusses, wall panels, metal roofing, metal framing components and pre-hung doors, and treats its own lumber. The company is 100-percent owned by its employees.
