The friends and family of Sandy Mochida-Rapozo will hold a special event, “Sandy’s Bone Marrow Drive Celebration,” from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, June 23, at the Honokaa High School cafeteria. Coordinators invite vendors to sign up for the fun event for a good cause.
Darlene E. Silva of Waimea is spearheading the event for Mochida-Rapozo, her hanai sister.
“Sandy has been battling the terrible disease of cancer ever since she was 34,” said Silva. “This started with breast cancer, and is now Chronic Myelogenous Leukemia (CML). Sandy has tried all forms of chemotherapy, and all have failed her.
“She was told to start looking for a bone marrow match. When a bone marrow match is found, the procedure has to take place within the next six months. That is why this is being done in such a short notice,” said Silva. “However, I believe if you put your mind to something, it can be done.”
There will be a variety of booths, Aunty Peaches’ Poi Balls, funnel cakes, rummage sales, a silent auction and free lucky number drawings. The prizes include a lunch for two at Merriman’s Restaurant, gift baskets and certificates from numerous generous businesses in the surrounding communities.
There also will be activities for the children, and free entertainment by I’land Boiz, Halau O Po‘ohala and more. There will be a grand prize give-away.
“As all of this is going on, the Bone Marrow Registry will be on site to test anyone who could be a possible match for Sandy, or anyone else in need of a transplant,” said Silva. “Just imagine; while you’re enjoying this celebration, you may be also saving someone’s life.
“Today’s advanced technology now makes this procedure easier than ever,” said Silva. “It only takes a quick swab of your mouth. Then if you are a match, you would give your marrow just as if you were giving blood.”
There is a $50 donation for vendor space. Call Silva at 315-7465, and she will refer you to the vendor chair.
“We look forward to seeing you all there,” she said.
