A 70-year-old man was transported to Hilo Medical Center on Sunday when an out-of-control race car crashed into the judges’ tent during a race at Hilo Drag Strip.
Three people were struck by the vehicle, according to a Hawaii Police Department report completed by Lt. Miles Chong. Only one, however, was injured badly enough to be transported to the hospital.
The red 2005 Lotus Elise was racing down the track during an autocross event sanctioned by the Sports Car Club of America. The driver was maneuvering through a course when he ran off the right side and struck a tripod-mounted timing sensor. The driver attempted to recover, the report said, and over-corrected, causing the vehicle to slide across the track and into the judging tent.
A police spokesman said Monday he did not know how fast the vehicle was traveling when it ran into the tent. He also could not provide the injured man’s name or condition.
The Hawaii County Fire Department responded to the scene at 2:14 p.m. and reported finding the driver of the vehicle “lying supine on ground next to vehicle with (2-inch) laceration to top of head and multiple abrasions over entire body,” according to an incident report. It added that the patient “was being attended to by bystanders,” and that he complained of neck pain.
