The Big Island Interscholastic Federation champions didn’t exactly strike fear into the hearts of the state tournament seedings committees on Sunday, with no BIIF team receiving higher than a third seed in three state events this week on Oahu.
In boys Division I volleyball, unbeaten BIIF champion Kamehameha-Hawaii (16-0) was dealt the No. 3 seed, behind No. 1 Punahou (ILH champ, 15-0) and No. 2 Moanalua (OIA champ, 15-0). King Kekaulike (MIL champ, 13-0) is the No. 4 seed in the 12-team state tournament, which runs Wednesday through Friday at the McKinley and Farrington gyms with the final round on Saturday at Blaisdell Arena.
The top four seeds draw first-round byes.
In Wednesday’s opening round, BIIF runner-up Waiakea (13-3) plays Waipahu (OIA No. 3, 12-3) at 5 p.m. at McKinley with the winner taking on top-seeded Punahou at 7 p.m. Thursday at McKinley. In other first-round matches, it’s Kalaheo (OIA No. 2, 13-3) vs. Kaiser (OIA No. 4, 10-6) at 7 p.m. at McKinley while at Farrington it’s Baldwin (MIL No. 2, 9-4) vs. Pearl City (OIA No. 5, 11-4) at 5 p.m. and Kamehameha-Kapalama (ILH No. 2, 12-3) vs. Leilehua (OIA No. 6, 10-4) at 7 p.m.
Kamehameha-Hawaii will battle Wednesday’s Kamehameha-Kapalama/Leilehua winner at 7 p.m. Thursday at Farrington.
In the eight-team boys D-II volleyball tournament, BIIF champion Hawaii Preparatory Academy is seeded No. 4, behind No. 1 Hawaii Baptist Academy (ILH champ, 10-0), No. 2 Seabury Hall (MIL champ, 11-2) and No. 3 McKinley (OIA champ, 11-3).
In first-round matches Thursday at the Kaimuki gym, it’s HPA vs. Waimea (KIF champ, 12-1) at 5 p.m. and HBA vs. Kahuku (OIA No. 2, 6-10) at 7 p.m. At the Kalani gym, it’s McKinley vs. Pahoa (BIIF No. 3, 9-9) at 5 p.m. and Seabury Hall vs. Kohala (BIIF No. 2, 12-5) at 7 p.m.
The semifinals will be played at 5 and 7 p.m. Friday at McKinley, with the final round at Blaisdell Arena on Saturday. The state D-II title match is scheduled for 5 p.m.

Softball
In the state D-I softball tournament, BIIF champion Hilo (13-4) is seeded No. 4 in the 12-team event, scheduled Wednesday through Saturday at the Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium.
Mid-Pacific (ILH champ, 14-2) is seeded No. 1, Campbell (OIA champ, 11-5) No. 2, Lahainaluna (MIL champ, 13-1) No. 3 and the Vikings No. 4. The top four seeds draw first-round byes.
In opening-round games, it’s Baldwin (MIL No. 2, 11-4) vs. Waianae (OIA No. 3, 10-6) at 1 p.m., Kamehameha-Kapalama (ILH No. 2, 13-3) vs. Moanalua (OIA No. 6, 12-5) at 3 p.m., Kapolei (OIA No. 2, 12-3) vs. Kailua (OIA No. 4, 11-5) at 5 p.m. and Punahou (ILH No. 3, 14-4) vs. Mililani (OIA No. 5, 11-3) at 7 p.m.
On Thursday, Hilo will battle the Kapolei/Kailua winner at 1 p.m., followed by Lahainaluna vs. the Kamehameha-Kapalama/Moanalua winner at 3 p.m., Mid-Pac vs. the Baldwin/Waianae winner at 5 p.m. and Campbell vs. the Punahou/Mililani winner at 7 p.m.
The semifinals are slated for 5 and 7 p.m. Friday and the title game at 7 p.m. Saturday.
In the 12-team state D-II softball tournament, BIIF champion Kamehameha-Hawaii (8-9) is seeded No. 3, behind No. 1 Waimea (KIF champ, 12-0) and No. 2 Nanakuli (OIA champ, 9-5). Lanai (MIL champ, 8-3) is the No. 4 seed.
The tournament will be played at Central Oahu Regional Park on Wednesday and Thursday, with Friday’s and Saturday’s games at Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium. The state D-II title game is slated at 5 p.m. Saturday at the UH site.
In first-round games Wednesday at 5 p.m., it’s Kohala (BIIF No. 2, 10-4) vs. Waipahu (OIA No. 3, 11-1) on Field 1 and Hana (MIL No. 2, 8-3) vs. Waialua (OIA No. 4, 9-4) on Field 2. At 7 p.m., it’s Kalaheo (OIA No. 2, 10-4) vs. Honokaa (BIIF No. 3, 8-7) on Field 1 and Kauai (KIF No. 2, 6-6) vs. St. Francis (ILH champ, 7-9) on Field 2.
On Thursday, it’s Waimea vs. the Kohala/Waipahu winner at 5 p.m. on Field 3 and at 7 p.m., it’s Lanai vs. the Kalaheo/Honokaa winner on Field 1, Nanakuli vs. the Hana/Waiaalua winner on Field 2 and Kamehameha-Hawaii vs. the Kauai/St. Francis winner on Field 3.
The semifinals are scheduled for 1 and 3 p.m. Friday at Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium.

Water polo
BIIF champion Kamehameha-Hawaii (12-0) has been seeded No. 3 in the 12-team state girls water polo tournament, slated Wednesday through Saturday at the Duke Kahanamoku Aquatic Complex on the University of Hawaii-Manoa campus.
Punahou (ILH champ, 6-0) is the No. 1 seed, Kahuku (OIA champ, 14-0) No. 2, Kamehameha-Hawaii No. 3 and Baldwin (MIL champ. 10-0) No. 4. The top four seeds draw first-round byes.

On Thursday, it’s Baldwin vs. the Kapolei/Mililani winner at 3 p.m., Kahuku vs. the Kamehameha-Maui/Kaiser winner at 4:30 p.m., Punahou vs. the Waiakea/Roosevelt winner at 6 p.m. and Kamehameha-Hawaii vs. the Kamehameha-Kapalama/Leilehua winner at 7:30 p.m.
The semifinals are scheduled at 6 and 7:30 p.m. Friday, with the championship at 4:30 p.m. Saturday.

Softball corrections: Kamehameha-Hawaii catcher Gayla Ha-Cabebe is a sophomore on the Warriors’ Division II championship softball team.
It was incorrectly listed in a story Sunday that she was a junior after the Warriors beat Kohala 5-1 for the BIIF title.
Also, the champion Warriors earned the BIIF’s No. 1 seed and not the No. 1 seed in the state tournament as reported earlier.
