WAILUKU, Maui — A former substitute band teacher at a Maui middle school is facing charges that he had a sexual relationship with an 8th grader.
The Maui News reports that Jim Alan Balicanta, who taught at Iao Intermediate School, has been indicted on 52 sexual assault charges.
He was arrested on Friday and was being held on $750,000 bail at the Maui Community Correctional Center.
Authorities say the 40-year-old Balicanta assaulted the girl over a three-year period. The girl came forward with the allegations in January.
District School Superintendent Bruce Anderson said Balicanta has not worked at the school since January.
A bail hearing for Balicanta is scheduled for Wednesday.
