A new school year of Japanese language and culture classes starts July 30 at the Honpa Hongwanji Hilo Betsuin at 398 Kilauea Ave. in Hilo.
The Gakuen, or Japanese Language School, at the Hongwanji is an after-school language program for children in grades 1-8. Levels 1-2 will meet from 2:45-3:25 p.m. on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday, and from 1:45-2:25 p.m. on Wednesday.
Using the immersion method, the school offers unique teaching in the four main areas of language: reading, writing, comprehension and conversation. Along with language, students also learn about Japanese culture and develop character-building skills.
Tuition is $50 per month, with discounts available. Applications are currently being accepted for the new school year. Interested students are invited to observe classes currently in session. Contact Honpa Hongwanji Hilo Betsuin at 961-6677.
