Adult Friends for Youth announces its 21th Annual Student Transition Convention — Moving on Up — to help elementary students make a healthy transition as they are advancing from the relatively protected environment of elementary school to the challenges of middle school.
The Big Isle presentation will be from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Thursday, May 10, at the Afook-Chinen Civic Auditorium in Hilo.
Students will learn from funnyman Frank De Lima, as he portrays various characters in dealing with themes such as shyness and bullying.
Panelists, consisting of older students and teachers/counselors, will answer questions the elementary students ask about the concerns they have about middle school, what they can expect and how to deal with problems that might occur. They will learn about physical and emotional changes, challenges and coping skills.
To date, 78 schools and 6,137 students are registered for the sessions on four islands. For more information, contact Elizabeth Yonamine at 833-8775 or afy@afyhawaii.com. Visit www.afyhawaii.com.
