On Monday, April 23, Basically Books in Hilo lent some island kokua to World Book Night volunteers in an event that will give away half a million free books across the U.S.
Book givers signed up to receive 20 free copies of one of 30 books selected for this year. After picking up their books, givers will help promote reading by going out into the community to share their chosen books in locations as diverse as hospitals, nursing homes, schools, ballparks, feed-the hungry programs, a Hilo PowWow fundraiser and more.
Visit www.basicallybooks.com for more information, and www.worldbooknight.org for a list of the 30 World Book Night U.S. titles for 2012. The books were chosen by a panel of booksellers and librarians through several rounds of voting.
“The staff of Basically Books is proud to be a partner in the first World Book Night in the U.S., an ambitious campaign to give away specially printed books across America, following the impressive launch of this campaign by bookselling and publishing colleagues in the U.K. and Ireland last year,” said owner Christine Reed. “This year World Book Night will take place in the U.K., U.S. and Germany.
“World Book Night U.S. is supported by authors, publishers, Barnes & Noble, the American Booksellers Association, the American Library Association, Ingram Content Group, United Parcel Services, and 15 printers and paper companies.”
