Learning together, building together was the theme on April 15, as about 20 people from around the Big Island gathered with Hawaii Preparatory Academy students at the school’s Village Campus for an earth oven workshop.
The session was led by Skye Hoefke, a natural materials builder/earth block mason, and Noah Dodd, HPA’s Ulumau Garden coordinator.
The event was presented as part of HPA’s Earth Day celebration. Participants learned about natural building, earth architecture and earth block construction. Students and community members got down and dirty as they “kneaded mud” and created blocks of various sizes that will be used in constructing HPA’s earth oven.
A potluck lunch featuring fresh salad greens from Ulumau Garden followed. Visit www.hpa.edu.
