‘Imiloa Astronomy Center will celebrate Earth Day from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday, April 22, with activities, displays and a special $5 admission rate for visitors who present a recycling receipt upon admission.
There will be special educational activities centered on sustainability in such areas as biodiesel, worm composting and a farmers market with the University of Hawaii at Hilo College of Agriculture.
‘Imiloa Astronomy Center is a Leadership in Energy Efficient Design (LEED) certified building. The “green” building has been awarded a coveted LEED certification by the U.S. Green Building Council. The building is composed of 75 percent recycled material and houses systems to control power and light consumption and provide overall environmental efficiency.
The native landscape garden is a living exhibit of endemic, indigenous, and Polynesian-introduced plants, or what are often called “canoe plants.” For details, visit www.imiloahawaii.org.
