Pulama health care conference set for UHH
The ninth annual Pulama I Ke Ola Healthcare Conference committee announces the presentation lineup for its May 18 main event — “Mandate to Communicate to Improve Healthcare,” which will focus on the importance of effective communication strategies.
All health care professionals are invited to attend the conference at the University of Hawaii at Hilo. Program details are available at www.uhh.hawaii.edu/depts/nursing.
“Effective communication strategies between patients and their health care team present a more cohesive approach to improved health outcomes and quality of life,” said conference chair Cecilia Mukai. “We are fortunate to have experts in the field here in Hawaii who are sensitive to the cultural diversity and special needs of our island communities.”
The keynote speaker will be Randy Hirokawa, dean of the College of Arts & Sciences, who will discuss “What Can Stories About Hot Tubs and McDonald’s Breakfasts Teach Us About Health Care Team Performance?”
The Pulama conference also includes a separate two-day event for Hawaii Island youths interested in health care careers on May 15-16. Students will get to network with professionals currently practicing in various health care fields and learn from interactive presentations.
The Pulama I Ke Ola Healthcare Conference is hosted by the UH-Hilo School of Nursing through a partnership with the American Cancer Society Hawaii Island Field Office and ACS CAN. Need more information? Visit the website or contact Mukai at cmukai@hawaii.edu or 756-1102.
