The Big Island-based Mauna Kea Recreational Users Group (MKRUG) announces that Hawaii Island’s Na Ala Hele Council is seeking a fishing representative.
Na Ala Hele is a state program of public access trails monitored by a mixed-user citizen panel.
“What we are looking for is a knowledgeable shoreline fisherman to help insure that fishermen have public access to public lands,” said Dennis Vierra, MKRUG’s Off Highway Vehicle (OHV) representative and Na Ala Hele Council member.
OHV users, who include off-road motorcycles and ATVs, support the national Recreational Trails Program and underwrite Hawaii’s trail program. OHV funding is nearly a $1 million annual contribution paid for by federal gasoline tax trust fund money, explained Vierra.
He said MKRUG began in 2009 as a “means of uniting users of public lands, as a clearing house of conflicts and to identify interests. MKRUG promotes the right of access to and responsible use of public lands.”
Fishermen interested in applying for the Na Ala Hele spot should contact Bob Duerr at kappahi@earthlink.net or 937-9104 for more info. Fishing groups wanting to join MKRUG can also contact Duerr.
