Wailoa Arts & Cultural Center will reopen its doors after several months of renovation by presenting the works of 12 maoli, or Native Hawaiian, artists.
The public is invited to an opening reception from 5-7 p.m. Friday, April 6, at the center on Piopio Street, next to the Vietnam Memorial and below the State Building in Hilo.
The exhibit is titled “He Maiau, He Noiau, He Ola! Skilled Men, Skilled Women, Life!” It is sponsored by Mamo and Vicki Takamine Holt’s Pa‘i organization dedicated to perpetuation of Hawaiian arts and culture.
Coordinator Kaohu Seto says the exhibit will feature multimedia works from the artists, including the graphic art of Craig Neff and Nitta Pilago, and master canoe builder Ray Bumatay.
Wailoa Arts & Cultural Center is an agency of the Division of State Parks, Department of Land and Natural Resources, and is free and opened to the public Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Wednesday from noon to 4:30 p.m., and closed Saturday, Sunday and state holidays.
