Cal Baptist clobbered the University of Hawaii at Hilo 15-6 in a Pacific West Conference baseball game Wednesday night, extending the Vulcans’ losing streak to 12 games, which matches the longest skid in school history on the Division II level, set last season.
The Lancers (21-4, 18-2 PacWest) closed the five-game series with a hit parade, banging out 19 hits against five pitchers before 66 people at Wong Stadium.
The Vulcans (4-17, 1-13) committed four errors, which led to six unearned runs. For the season, they’ve made 46 errors, an average of more than two per game.
Tyler Simao went four innings and took the loss. He gave up five runs — with three unearned — on five hits and one walk.
Dane Kinoshita pitched an inning and allowed five runs on six hits and one walk. Jarin Kadooka tossed an inning and allowed a run. Makana Ramie went an inning and yielded four runs — with three unearned. Patrick Fletcher pitched two scoreless innings.
Travis Ogimi batted 2 for 2 with two RBIs, and Travis Stancil had two RBIs to lead the Vulcans, who had seven hits.
Matt Daugherty and Andy Crowley each went 2 for 4 with two RBIs to lead the Lancers.
David Herd pitched six innings of one-hit ball for the win. He walked three and struck out four. Cory Schubert and Ethan Mack pitched the final three innings.
UHH’s longest losing streak is 20 games, set twice in 2001 and ‘02. In 2002, the Vuls finished 5-45, the worst record in school history.
The program has been on the Division II level since 2008. UHH is 80-117 during that span and hasn’t posted a winning season in 19 years.
A 16-day road trip against Dixie State, Grand Canyon, Cal Baptist and Academy of Art is around the corner, starting Sunday against DSC at St. George, Utah.
