Crews recover body in ocean
PRINCEVILLE, Kauai (AP) — Firefighters have recovered a body believed to be that of a hiker swept out to sea while trying to cross a stream in Kauai, officials said Sunday.
The woman’s body was pulled from the ocean after it was spotted by a tour boat about four miles west of Hanakapiai Sunday morning, Kauai Fire Department Chief Robert Westerman said in a statement.
The body was taken by a Kauai Fire Department helicopter crew to Princeville Airport, where officials were trying to identify the hiker.
Officials were asking anyone who may know her identity to call authorities.
The recovery of the woman’s body comes after witnesses reported a person trying to cross Hanakapiai Stream near its mouth was swept into the ocean by strong currents around 2:55 p.m. Saturday.
The person swept away was described as a man, but Kauai fire officials said except for the gender, the body recovered Sunday was consistent with the descriptions of the person swept away.
A U.S. Coast Guard helicopter had searched throughout the night for the hiker.
The hiker was swept out to sea as large waves pounded the Kauai coast.
The National Weather Service said with waves up to 10 feet and rough seas, a surf advisory remains in effect until 6 a.m. Monday.
