Maui is home
to wettest spot
HONOLULU (AP) — A team of scientists say Hawaii has a new wettest spot.
The University of Hawaii scientists say Big Bog on Maui’s eastern slope above Hana has about 402 inches of rainfall a year. That now makes Kauai’s Mount Waialeale the state’s second-wettest location, which has 394 inches of rainfall a year.
Climatologist Tom Giambelluca says the rainfall at Big Bog went unnoticed until 1992 when a rain gauge was installed at its 5,400-foot-high location.
The study confirms climatologists’ observations that Hawaii has gotten drier over the past 100 years.
Rains let up on
Oahu and Kauai
HONOLULU (AP) — The National Weather Service has lifted a flash flood watch for Hawaii as a weather system that soaked Oahu and Kauai has weakened.
On Wednesday, the islands were dealing with the aftermath of several days of heavy rains that caused sewage spills, flooding and road closures.
Honolulu crews are sampling water after two sewer overflows combined released at least 40,000 gallons of storm water and raw wastewater into Palolo Stream and Wailupe Stream on Tuesday. State education officials said Hanalei School remained closed Wednesday because of water damage.
The downpour collapsed a ceiling in an art building at Kapiolani Community College in Honolulu. Lightning hit a Kunia home and sank a Honolulu boat.
Jail for woman who faked death
WAILUKU, Maui (AP) — A woman who faked her mother’s death must serve seven days in jail on Maui for defrauding her ex-fiance out of money.
Second Circuit Judge Rhonda Loo also sentenced Beverly Lupton to five years’ probation and called her a cruel con artist. Court records show Lupton’s then-fiance paid for her and her 4-year-old son to fly to California to live with him in 2010.
She later told him her mother had died and she needed to return to Maui. He paid for airline tickets and gave her money for funeral expenses. But court records say he later discovered Lupton’s mother was alive and well.
Loo says Lupton’s brother and co-defendant backed up the fake death story. They must pay nearly $2,000 in restitution.
Piglet found in
a hotel lobby
HONOLULU (AP) — Guests at a hotel near Honolulu’s airport found a suckling pig in the lobby.
The Hawaiian Humane Society was called to the hotel last week, when an injured 5-week-old female pig was found running around the lobby. It was unclear how the piglet ended up there. Humane society spokeswoman Tasha Tanimoto says the pig has been named Pukalani and will be available for adoption once she’s a little older. Tanimoto says the piglet is being bottle-fed by a volunteer.
