Near drowning at Kona beach

Fire rescuers say a man who almost drowned Sunday at Laaloa Beach Park in Kona may have suffered a spinal injury from body surfing.

The victim was described as unresponsive when pulled from the water by county lifeguards around midday. Lifeguards performed CPR on the man, who regained semi-consciousness before being taken by ambulance to Kona Community Hospital. The man, who was not identified, is reportedly recovering from his injuries.
