Cancer Society offers assistance
Sometimes the hardest part of cancer treatment is how to get there.
Volunteers are an integral part of the American Cancer Society, and it’s Road to Recovery Program is one of the many ways that an individual can make a difference in the fight against cancer.
The program’s dedicated volunteers offer safe, one-on-one rides to cancer patients in need of transportation to their treatment appointments.
“One cancer patient requiring radiation treatment could need anywhere from 20 to 30 treatments in six weeks,” said Cecily Nago of the American Cancer Society’s Hawaii Island Field Office.
“Oftentimes, cancer patients are either too weak or ill to drive themselves. In some cases, a patient is driven to hospitals or clinics by relatives or friends, but even these patients must occasionally seek alternative transportation. There are some who have no friends or family who can assist. That’s when our Road to Recovery Program can offer a helping hand.”
The American Cancer Society is currently looking for volunteer drivers for its program. The next training session is scheduled for March 24 from 9-10:30 a.m. at the American Cancer Society Office at 120 Pauahi St., Suite 302 in Hilo.
If you would like to volunteer as a driver, or you or a friend or family member needs a ride to treatment, or please call Cecily Nago at the Hawaii Island Field Office at 935-9763. Some restrictions may apply.
