Police warning Oahu protesters
HONOLULU (AP) — Honolulu city officials are warning Occupy Honolulu protesters they have 24 hours to move tents and other belongings from a sidewalk next to a city park where they have been camping for several months. City crews acted under a new law that allows officials to remove personal property stored in public areas.
City spokeswoman Louise Kim McCoy said Wednesday city maintenance and parks officials began issuing the notices about 9 a.m.
The city earlier this year gave similar warnings to dozens of homeless people living on sidewalks and in parks.
Trial will begin in hazing case
KANEOHE BAY, Oahu (AP) — The Marine Corps says a squad leader accused of hazing a Marine who later killed himself in Afghanistan will go to trial next week.
Sgt. Benjamin Johns will face a general court martial Monday at Kaneohe Bay. He’s the second Marine to go to trial in the case.
The first, Lance Cpl. Jacob Jacoby, pleaded guilty to assault for punching and kicking Lance Cpl. Harry Lew shortly before Lew shot himself April 3.
A military judge earlier this week sentenced Jacoby to 30 days in jail and a reduction in rank. Johns was the leader of the squad that included Lew.
Website to test Internet speeds
HONOLULU (AP) — Hawaii is launching a new website that will allow users to test their own Internet connection speeds as well as help the state identify and close gaps in broadband Internet service.
Gov. Neil Abercrombie’s office said Tuesday data collected from the project at hawaiispeedtest.net will give the state an estimate of current Internet connection speeds around the islands.
The administration last year announced a plan to make Hawaii’s Internet connections 200 times faster over the next seven years.
The plan aims to ensure Hawaii has world class broadband service at affordable prices, and that even the most remote areas have equitable access.
The administration also hopes to promote a system of regulations and permits that supports investment in broadband infrastructure.
