More than 650 graduate HPU
Terrilani J. Chong of Honomu and Alvin Acupan of Keaau were among more than 650 students who received associate, baccalaureate or master degrees at Hawaii Pacific University’s 77th commencement ceremony Dec. 20 at the Neal Blaisdell Center in Honolulu.
Chong received a Master of Arts in Organizational Change.
Acupan received a Bachelor of Science in Nursing.
Group offers two scholarships
Hui Okinawa is offering two $1,000 scholarships to students who plan to continue their post-high school education in the fall.
One scholarship is for a high school graduate who plans to attend a two- or four-year educational institution for the first time in 2012. The second scholarship is for a college student continuing his education or a university graduate enrolling in graduate school in 2012.
Applicants for the first scholarship, Hui Okinawa Scholarship for High School Students, must be a graduate of on accredited high school or GED program in the state of Hawaii.
Applicants for the second scholarship, Hui Okinawa Scholarship for College Students, must be a graduate of an accredited high school or GED program in the state of Hawaii.
Application forms for the high school scholarship are available at the counselor’s office of public, private and chartered high schools and adult community schools on the Big Island. Applications are also available through Nancy Nakaishi (961-4677), Alben Namihira (961-3443) or Margaret Torigoe (895-0994). Call one of the three if more information is needed.
Deadline for both scholarships is March 31.
Kindergarten registration open
Parents are encouraged to register their children for kindergarten or junior kindergarten for the 2012-2013 school year. Children who will be 5 years old on or before Aug. 1, 2012, may enroll in regular kindergarten, while children who reach 5 years of age between Aug. 2 and Dec. 31 may enroll in junior kindergarten. Kindergarten is not mandatory in Hawaii.
Registration will be held on the Big Isle on various dates February through April. Call school or district.
