Sex offender to serve 10 years
LIHUE, Kauai (AP) — A convicted Kauai sex offender must serve 10 years for molesting an 8-year-old girl.
The Hawaii Paroling Authority has set Eaton Rivera’s minimum imprisonment term, which Kauai County Prosecuting Attorney Shaylene Iseri-Carvalho announced earlier this week.
Last year, Rivera was convicted of 11 counts of second-degree sexual assault and sentenced to 10 years.
At a parole authority hearing in October, Iseri-Carvalho argued he shouldn’t be released sooner. She says he violated his position of trust as a family member, repeatedly sexually assaulting the girl during the summer months of 2007 through July 2009.
The defense argued for leniency, saying he took responsibility for his actions by pleading guilty.
Iseri-Carvalho says a 10 year term is minimal considering the “lifetime sentence” that the victim has been subjected to.
Two sentenced in bribery probe
HONOLULU (AP) — A former Army sergeant and a sergeant major who were stationed in Afghanistan have been sentenced to prison for taking a $50,000 bribe in exchange for steering a $1.5 million military contract to a trucking company.
The U.S. Department of Defense said retired Sgt. Charles Finch, of Mililani, Hawaii, received a 51-month sentence Thursday and Sgt. Major Gary Canteen, of Delaware, received a 31-month sentence Friday.
The two men pleaded guilty to conspiracy and bribery in August.
Federal prosecutors say Finch and Canteen agreed to accept money from AZ Corporation in return for recommending the company for a contract to transport goods to U.S. soldiers and coalition forces throughout Afghanistan. The bribe was put into a bank account Canteen maintained for a souvenir shop he owned in Hawaii.
The Justice Department says 10 other Army and National Guard officers have been sentenced for similar crimes at Bagram Airfield in Afghanistan.
