Deonicio “Dino” Debina Canda, 87, of Keaau died Feb. 15 at Hilo Medical Center. Born in Kealakekua, he was a basketball referee and baseball and fastpitch softball umpire working UH-Hilo and Big Island Interscholastic Federation games, fastpitch softball player, head coach at UH-Hilo and pitching coach and Hilo and Waiakea High Schools, member of Big Island Sports Hall of Fame, retired state airport crash and rescue operator engineer, worked for the former Puna Sugar Co., Hilo High School Class of 1955 graduate, attended the University of Hawaii at Hilo, Peace Corps volunteer and U.S. Marine Corps veteeran. Visitation 4-6 p.m. Friday, April 12, at Dodo Mortuary Chapel. Memorial Service at 6 p.m. Casual attire. Tropical Gardening: Easter healing gardens create peace of mind

What has the Easter Bunny and eggs have to do with Easter? The return of Jesus after the crucifixion has little to do with bunnies and eggs. However, the concept of rebirth and resurrection was based on the pagan holiday of Eostra that celebrated new life and fertility. Early Christians connected the two events and thus we celebrate with joy rather than sorrow.

Hilo gun rights advocate George Young dies at 74

George K. Young Jr., a retired U.S. Army Ranger master sergeant and Vietnam War veteran whose decade-long legal battle resulted in the feds ruling Hawaii’s counties must issue concealed-carry gun permits to law-abiding citizens, died March 19 at home in Hilo. He was 74.

Special Olympics swimming: West Hawaii Sharks excited and grateful for 2024 season

KAILUA-KONA — The Kona Community Aquatic Center (KCAC) is a special place to many in the community. It’s a gathering site where everyone — regardless of swim level — can escape reality and cool off from the West Hawaii sun by participating in almost any aquatic activity imaginable. Some pool ventures include two age-group swim teams, Big Island Interscholastic Federation (BIIF) swimming, BIIF water polo, another recreational swim team, water aerobics, keiki swim lessons and more.
