The Big Island Chapter of the Hawaii Association of Public Accountants is now accepting applications for its scholarship program for the 2012-13 academic year. Each year, HAPA awards up to $3,500 in scholarships to future accountants. These include two $1,000 awards for students to use at a four-year college or university and two $750 awards for students to use at a two-year college. The institutions need not be located in Hawaii, but they must be accredited.

Qualified applicants must either be: 1. a current Big Island high school senior; 2. a graduate of any Big Island high school; or 3. be enrolled in at the University of Hawaii at Hilo or Hawaii Community College in the fall, regardless of high school affiliation. Students must register for enrollment full-time (12 or more credits) to receive the award.

Applicants are judged based on academic achievements, involvement in extracurricular activities, a personal letter of introduction, and financial need. Applications are available at high school counselors' offices, the UHH financial aid office, and online at www.hawaiiassociationofpublicaccountants.org. Deadline for the 2012-2013 academic year is March 30.

HAPA is a state-wide organization of accounting professionals that offers continuing professional education and fellowship among the business community. The Big Island chapter includes over 80 Certified Public Accountants, Public Accountants, and associates. HAPA scholarships are offered to encourage students to pursue careers in accounting.
